TO the STUDENT:

Through TATSU DO it is my hope to show you not only self-defense but a way of life. Those who study it in earnest will reap tremendous rewards; those who will take it in jest will find nothing.

Student who aspires to be good must practice outside what he has learned inside. Lack of diligent practice will result in stagnation. Ranking will be determined on the basis of physical achievement and on mental attitude.

 Hanshi William R. Cavalier, Soke

Please remember, you don't ever ask to be ranked, your Sensei will test you when you are ready. In kyu ranks (below black belt) the minimum time between ranks is about 3 months, depending on the amount of time of practice. The more you put in, the more you get out.

In Black Belt ranks, there is a set time required in each rank before testing can be achieved. See Black Belt Requirements.

Congratulations -- you have done it !!!

Taylor Spragge Promoted to Orange Belt

Mr. Spragge worked hard to learn the techniques and vocabulary for his next rank. He attended classes 2-3 times per week in the last month, which allowed him to achieve his Orange Belt in shorter than usual time.

Congratualations!

Taylor Spragge Promoted to Yellow Belt

Taylor Spragge joined Sunrise Dojo about 6 weeks ago. Since he previously studied Ishin Ryu at another school he already knew the fundamentals and his progress to yellow belt was very quick.

He also competed at the Tatsu Do tournament for the first time. This was a new and valuable experience for him, as it puts an individual under extra pressure to perform without mistakes in front of a lot of people. This experience is valuable in many aspects of life in school and eventually in one's professional life.

Congratulations to Taylor (Mr. Spragge at the dojo) on his achievement.

Kim Werth and Jamilah Moussa-Werth Promoted to Orange Belt

Jamilah Moussa-Werth and Kimberley Werth (Mom  and Daughter) have taken their test during the last month and finished the last portion on Monday night, April 7, 2003. They were tested on their ability to perform basic karate techniques, including stances, blocks, punches and kicks.

Also, they were required to actually defend against various types of attacks, including punches, grabs, hair grabs and kicks. Both were required to perform kata (form) with perfection as well as participate in free style sparring.

Jasmine (on right) comes to classes with her sister and mom, to observe. She already knows how to count in Japanese and basic dojo protocol. She wants to join as soon as she is old enough (minimum age is six).

Emily Milgate achieves Brown Belt in Iai

Sensei Emily Milgate (15) is the first junior level student to achieve brown belt in Iai Jutsu at the Sunrise Dojo. Requirements include mandatory drawing and cutting forms (Happo Giri), knowledge of 7 Iai Jutsu Waza, 2 Iai Kata, 2-person sparring exercises with wooden sword (bokken) and contact sparring with padded sword (Goshin Ken).

In addition, Emily has learned both sides of 15 Tatsu Do Kumitachi forms, well ahead of her rank.

All of the sword forms are performed with razor-sharp live blade, including a test of actual cutting, performed on rolled up rice straw mat, called goza.
